The Spire is out now!

the spire 2

Just a short blurb announcing that I have temporarily posted my latest short story called The Spire up on Wattpad for free until December 1st.

The premise of the short story is of a memoryless man trapped atop a spire in the middle of the ocean who must cross a temporal bridge that appears every so often. The catch is that a beast awaits his arrival on the opposing side. The man must overcome his fear of the beast and discover the truth of his origin.

It’s a positive story with an empowering ending. If you like fantasy and main characters that triumph against all odds, then you’ll enjoy this quick 4-page read. Check it out now here: The Spire (Limited time only) on Wattpad.

Enjoy!

New Chapter, New Group

Storm-Fallen is back in action! Sorry for the month-long hiatus from posting, but I’m here now and I’ll be posting once a week, most likely on Fridays. I have several things I would like to announce this week including: the latest chapter of Storm-Fallen on Wattpad, a new Facebook group for unpublished and newly-published authors, and upcoming O2 Reviews.

Chapter 24: Old Blood, New Weapon– This week’s chapter returns with Darlowe and Runa as they continue to wait for the other Liberators to show. Their current military leader, Commander Udgallus, makes an appearance as well, bringing with him a new weapon prototype for them to use against the Storm-Fallen. Here is the link to Wattpad: Chapter 24: Old Blood, New Weapon

The First Novel Group– Last week I started a closed group on Facebook called The First Novel Group. I created it for unpublished authors working on their first novel to be able to connect with others pursuing the publication of their first book. It’s also available to authors who have published their first novel and would like to promote it or give helpful information on how they went about the publication process. We currently have 23 members and gladly welcome any others interested in joining. The atmosphere is very supportive and the members actively provide answers to questions  others bring up. I look forward to seeing some new members so come join us on your journey to publication!

O2 Reviews– I’m currently working on a review for Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation. I saw it Thursday night in IMAX and it was every bit the adventure the trailer teased it would be. The stunts blew my mind, but more on that in the review. I’m also looking for several people who are interested in writing reviews in order to get more O2 Reviews out there. It won’t be for money, but for the experience and networking. If you like video games, movies, tv shows, or books and would like to write reviews, send me a message. Thanks!

Well, that’s about it for this week. Talk to you all soon, or next Friday at the latest! Hope you like the newest chapter and let me know what you think in the comments.

O2 Reviews: Jurassic World *Spoiler Free*

Jurassic World-2015

Directed by Colin Trevorrow

Screenplay and Story by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver

Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Irrfan Khan

Summary: Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, which backfires horribly. (Jurassic World IMDb)

The park is now open! It’s been 22 years since the original dino-flick came roaring into theaters and into our hearts. Now it’s a fully-functioning theme park with jaw-dropping attractions, and they spared no expense! The film is that of a park ride itself, full of action and suspense, horror even, all leading up to its climactic finish that’ll have you gripping your seat out of fear, excitement, and awe. The IMAX 3D experience will leave you extremely satisfied and nodding your approval even after the hefty price. (Ahem, first and only movie I’ve ever felt compelled to clap for once the credits rolled.) But don’t think I didn’t have a few gripes about the movie: it had a few bumps, but none that could overpower the non-stop adrenaline this movie brings.

Cinematography 3/3

The picture quality and visuals were stunning. I had a few concerns going in about the dinosaurs being completely CGI and whether or not it would affect the feel of the movie, as the other films achieved amazing things with animatronics. But once the raptors were introduced, I realized how real they seemed. Not once was I taken out of the movie jurassic2because of bad computer graphics or lack of detail. In an age of green screen, this is a powerful statement and for that alone I give it full credit.

Genre/Direction 3/3

Jurassic World has a little something for everyone. I forgot how scary dinosaurs could be, honestly. This turned out to have real horror moments, more well done than most films labeled as Horror. The Indominous Rex comes off as the most creepy, and brutal, villain to come to the screen in recent years. With that being said, it’s also a summer action movie chalked full of all the great science fiction elements of the first film. I was so thrilled to see the amount of throwback teasers, or easter eggs, woven into the movie for all the fans of the original. I may have to write a separate article just for that!

Casting 3/3

Unfortunately, there isn’t any Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, or Laura Dern, but in a way, it was extremely refreshing. Hot off the success of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, Chris Pratt is most likely becoming a household name. His sense of humor is real and you easily welcome it among the screams and chaos of the park attendees running for their Jurassic Worldlives. Bryce Dallas Howard plays an integral role in the film, greatly portraying the common disconnect humans may have from the life that thrives all around them. Vincent D’Onofrio, who most recently played Kingpin in the new Daredevil series, acts very well and is perfect in his mysterious InGen role. And of course Ty Simpkins issues a great performance, bringing back the same level of wonderment that the children in the original film had, and basically portrays the audience in the first row of this thrilling rollercoaster ride.

Writing 3/3

The script couldn’t have been better. With all of the nostalgic easter eggs and fresh experiences of the theme park finally in full motion, the movie moved along at a great pace. It never dragged or felt out of character. It didn’t really try to live up to anything, it just was. And that’s what I love about the latest installment to the Jurassic franchise. They knew what everyone wanted to see, and they brought it, no holds barred, while still implementing a level of mystery and suspense that keeps you guessing. There were a few corny moments, one in which Howard’s character refuses to take off her heels the entire movie, but hey, the lengths we go to for fashion, right?

Sound and Score 3/3

The roars and seat trembling foot steps sound great in the IMAX theater. All of the original sound effects are back, bringing to life the characters of the dinos as you know and love them. The score was of course iconic and nostalgic in certain scenes, while knowing when to fade away for the intense chases, leaving you immersed in the action along with the characters on screen. All in all, a good balance of new and old.

Bechdal Test 2/3bryce-dallas-howard-jurassic-world

If you’re unfamiliar with the Bechdal Test, it gauges a movie’s treatment of women based on 3 criteria: 1) Does the movie feature two or more named women? 2) Do they talk to each other? 3) If so, do they speak about something other than the male characters?

In my opinion, the film passes, but only slightly. Howard’s character and her sister speak several times, and not about Pratt’s character. But the casting is fairly male dominated. I feel like Bryce Dallas Howard plays a strong enough female character to overcome this fact, but it was still an underlying issue. However, I hope that the movie can be enjoyed for what it is: a movie about dinosaurs.

O2 Verdict: Toxic/Polluted/Thin/Clean/PURE

jurassic-world-super-bowl-trailer-1Jurassic World is now in theaters! I recommend it for those that loved the original and/or love dinosaurs in general. Horror fans: look out, this one ranks up there with some of the best monster/killer movies ever. And fans of science fiction will love the questions about human morality, the advances in bio-technology, and how we see our place in the food chain. If you’ve got spare cash, check out the IMAX 3D experience. I highly recommend it.

New Chapter Thursday! Storm-Fallen 23: High Alert

In this chapter of Storm-Fallen Gy’ave Khraw reflects on her decision to judge Yarrex so harshly in public while attempting to fulfill her duty as Magistratus to her kin. Myalin and Jozz are rushed to meet the Lorrallen outside the city and run into a friendly face. Tensions rise in this installment as the storm and its demons get closer to the city. Ahhh!

Please comment and let me know what you think. I enjoy all feedback, even if it’s not positive. Thanks for the support and happy reading!

Storm-Fallen June News!

Big update today! I will be covering a lot of different developments as the last update like this was in October of last year on my previous website. Much has happened since then, a lot of cool stuff!

Currently, I’m at 37,700 words. Which is incredible when I think about the fact that I was going to stop at 10K. Now the story has bloomed into something much bigger than I thought possible, 7X – 9X larger actually if I continue at this rate. That being said, if I’m almost at 40K and I’m expecting an 80K-range novel then I’m almost halfway done with the first draft! Super excited! 28652-1

I’m still releasing chapters weekly on Wattpad (or bi-monthly depending on my motivation, haha), as well as revising the first 20, or so, chapters already available. You can read them here: Storm-Fallen on Wattpad.

Just a few days ago I spoke with artist Andreas Rocha (his piece ‘Desert Winds‘ is the featured image) on illustrating the cover of the novel. He will be sending me a rough draft soon and I’m extremely excited to be working with him and to see what he comes up with. You can find his portfolio at andreasrocha.com. His stuff is absolutely amazing. Please check it out.OwReviewspic1

I’m working on developing some useful reviews with a more technical review system. I don’t know if it’ll be thought of as useful, or fun to read, but I thought I’d give it a shot. I have one out now for ‘Welcome to the Punch‘ which was an action movie from 2013 that just came out on Netflix, but I’ll be working on some more current content within the next few weeks. Probably starting with Jurassic World this week! So if you’re interested look for O2 Reviews right here on my blog.

Well that’s about it for this update, I’ll post again soon if anything comes up worth mentioning. Thanks for checking in and please feel free to comment/message me, I will reply. Are you excited to see Jurassic World this weekend?

New Chapter Thursday! 22: Trial and Error

Thursday is here again and that means a brand new chapter of Storm-Fallen. This week Nevesa must deal with her injuries after taking on Yarrex all while facing the fact that she is stuck in Khraw until the storm passes. Jozz continues to deal with something that has plagued him since childhood, and Gy’ave does something out of impulse that may affect how the citizens view her rule. Check it out right here: http://www.wattpad.com/133442374-storm-fallen-22-trial-and-error  Continue reading
